This iPhone12 is in the first production of all 4 models

We now know which iPhone 12 models will be produced first. And there is some bad news for those planning to get their hands on the entry-level version of Apple's next phone.

According to a Digitimes report, mass production of the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 will begin in July or August, ahead of the rest of Apple's lineup. According to the report, Apple is still likely to announce the iPhone 12 in October, rather than the usual September event for all four models.

The report also confirms trade-offs we have heard previously about the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max. Apparently, only the iPhone 12 Pro model will offer both sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G.

On the other hand, regular iPhone 12 models may only have sub-6GHz 5G support. In other words, it will enjoy faster speeds than LTE, but not the 1 Gbps downloads offered by mmWave.

To be fair, mmWave has a very limited range and requires a line of sight to nearby 5G nodes. However, Verizon plans to double the number of cities offering mmWave by the end of the year. AT&T has also begun to deploy mmWave 5G in its own network.

Digitimes also reports that all four iPhones will feature OLED displays. Samsung Display has reportedly won 75% of the OLED panel orders, including for the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 and the 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro. LG Display and BOE are said to be splitting orders for the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Max.

The 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch flexible OLED panels will use Samsung's Y-OCTA Touch technology. This means that these devices will not require "out-cell touch modules or lamination"; the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 model will likely require an out-cell touch module, but that does not change the user experience.

Besides 5G support, there are other important differences between the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models that are important to know. According to previous reports, the iPhone 12 will likely have two cameras (wide and ultra-wide), while the iPhone 12 Pro will have three cameras (wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto) and a LiDAR sensor. And only the iPhone 12 Pro is expected to offer a 120 Hz ProMotion display for smoother refresh rates.

The iPhone 12 is expected to start at $649, the iPhone 12 Max at $749, the iPhone 12 Pro at $999, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max at $1099. So despite the tradeoffs, many shoppers are expected to gravitate toward the more affordable entry-level iPhone 12s.
