iOS13.5 issues wreak havoc on iPhones and iPads

Apple's iOS 13.5 and iPadOS 13.4.1 are causing serious problems for iPhone and iPad users due to reports of iPad Pro bootloops and an inability to play MP4/MPEG-4 files on the iPhone.

AppleInsider notes that iPadOS 13.4.1 causes the 10.5-inch iPad Pro to reboot repeatedly 30-45 seconds after logging into the tablet. Also, a full factory reset does not resolve the issue. There are reports that this issue is also occurring on iPhones running both iOS 13.4.1 and iOS 13.5.

On Apple's support forum, the most recent post regarding the iPad issue was made on May 31, with the poster reporting that suggested steps to resolve the issue, such as a hard reboot, do not work. The submitter stated that the bug "renders the iPad unusable."

Also, given the lack of official response to the bug or acknowledgement of its existence in the support forum, it appears that Apple has not initiated a fix. There are also no clues as to why these restarts occur. However, the bug seems to affect only a fairly small number of iPad Pro users and does not seem to be a prolific problem.

On the iPhone side, the major problems that seem to be plaguing Apple fans seem to be focused on issues with playing back MP4/MPEG-4 encoded content, which does not seem to work on some phones running iOS 13.4 and iOS 13.5. Again, it is unclear if Apple is working on a fix for this issue.

However, Apple has fixed the bug that was causing apps to not open on iOS 13.5. And Apple had to tackle a bug affecting the "Sign in with Apple" feature in third-party apps that could expose users to cyberattacks and allow account takeover due to improper security implementation.

Apple also appears to be busy fixing a zero-day vulnerability that could make it easier for iOS 13.5 to jailbreak iPhones, with other noted issues such as reports of severe battery drain that have occurred to some iPhone users after upgrading to iOS 13.5. Taken together, the release of iOS13.5 seems to have been a bumpy ride.

However, iOS 13.5 is notable for its native support for the Coronavirus contact tracking app and service framework. In addition, Face ID can now recognize users even when wearing a face mask.

Thus, if you are an iPhone user and have an iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, or iPhone SE 2020, it is worth upgrading to iOS 13.5. However, you may want to wait until Apple resolves the issue.
