Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 almost ready to launch — but there is bad news

Galaxy Fold 2 is about to enter mass production. However, a significant upgrade to the display may be foregone.

The report comes from Hankook Ilbo, a major South Korean newspaper (via PhoneArena). According to the paper, Samsung has ordered parts that are expected to be used in the Fold 2 from core suppliers and is preparing production for an August launch.

The Fold 2 has long been rumored to arrive in August alongside the Galaxy Note 20. If this report and other rumors are accurate, Samsung will have a lead time of about two months.

The Korea Daily also reported that Samsung may use UTG (ultra-thin glass) material for the Fold 2's display, and that this material may also be used in the successor to the Galaxy Z Flip, which was the first to use this material. UTG is a folding phone that uses the are tougher than the standard CPI (clear polyimide) display covers found on most foldable phones (but still weaker than the Gorilla Glass used on non-foldable devices).

The addition of UTG would be a welcome upgrade for folds. However, it is not a certainty that it will be added due to the difficulty of applying UTG to the display surface beneath it. This is unfortunate, as the report claims that Samsung is preparing CPI displays in case UTG cannot be made to work at the required volume.

When the Fold 2 arrives, it is expected to be priced at around $1800, a slight price drop compared to the original Galaxy Fold. the Galaxy Fold 2 will also feature a 120Hz display and main, ultrawide, telephoto, and time-of-flight sensors with It will reportedly feature a quad camera array with main, ultra-wide, telephoto, and time-of-flight sensors. It may also be joined by a lower-priced model that will support the S Pen stylus and may be named Galaxy Fold Lite.
