Ps5 and Xbox Series X Killer features teased by Mortal Kombat Creators

From what little footage we've seen of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, it's no surprise that the next generation of consoles will make games look great. But according to the creators of "Mortal Kombat," the real killer feature of the new system has nothing to do with graphics at all.

Ed Boone, creative director of NetherRealm Studios and co-creator of "Mortal Kombat," recently appeared on a special episode of Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest to discuss "Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath" about the new expansion, and when Keighley asked Boone for his thoughts on what the PS5 and Xbox Series X will allow the studio to do, Boone immediately responded that one element that will really move the game forward is the console's fast loading SSD drive was mentioned.

"I think people underestimate the impact of having almost zero load times," Boone's comments begin around the 36-minute mark of the video.

"Things that were previously thought to be impossible suddenly become possible. I don't think we've even scratched the surface of what will ultimately be possible with these systems."

Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X will feature custom solid state drives (SSDs); the PS5 will have an 825GB drive while the Series X will have a 1TB SSD, with slightly different capacities, but both console games loading times will be reduced to almost zero.

It is already clear how significant this upgrade will be in everyday use: in March, Xbox posted a side-by-side comparison of loading times for the Xbox Series X and Xbox One X, compared to nearly a minute for the Xbox One X, The new console showed that games like State of Decay 2 load in about 8 seconds.

Boone is not the only developer to endorse the new console technology, as Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, shortly after launching Unreal Engine 5 earlier this month, stated that the PS5's SSD "far surpasses anything you can buy on a PC,

and that it will drive the future of PC gaming.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X are expected to arrive later this year, touting advanced features such as 8K resolution support, ray tracing capabilities, and advanced 3D audio. But it may be the ability to load games in an instant that makes these machines feel like true next-generation machines.
