The foldable Motorola Razr wowed us with its nostalgic design, but underwhelmed us with regard to its execution. So it's no surprise that Motorola is trying to right some wrongs with this sequel to the phone, which debuted this past February.

Thanks to an XDA Developers report on the Motorola Razr 2's specs, it's even clearer how substantial these changes are. The report, by an unnamed source, details many of the hardware specifications of the planned follow-up to the original folding Razr.

According to the report, the Motorola Razr 2 will look much like its predecessor, with a 2.7-inch external screen on a phone that flips open to reveal a 6.2-inch internal display. This time around, the emphasis seems to be on improving the phone's internal specs. On Motorola's part, this is a welcome move, as areas such as processing power and battery life are where the original Razr was really lacking.

Starting with the processor, the Motorola Razr 2 is expected to feature the Snapdragon 765 system-on-chip, which will increase processing power over the Snapdragon 710 found in the original Razr. Motorola will reportedly add 8GB of RAM to this processor, up from 6GB of memory in the original Motorola Razr. Storage is expected to double from 128GB to 256GB.

The true significance of the Snapdragon 765 goes beyond increased processing power. This Qualcomm chipset has a built-in 5G modem, which will give the Motorola Razr 2 the ability to connect to faster 5G networks. The first foldable Razr only had an LTE modem. [But not all 5G is created equal; according to XDA, the Motorola Razr 2 will only support 5G networks below 6GHz. Faster mmWave-based 5G requires a different antenna, and there may not be room for it in a compact phone like the Motorola Razr. If true, this would mean that the phone would likely not work on Verizon's mmWave-based 5G network.

The original Motorola Razr lasted only 6 hours in our battery tests. So it is understandable that Motorola would want to increase the size of the 2,510 mAh battery in its first foldable phone; the Razr 2's battery will reportedly be 2,845 mAh, which is certainly larger than before, but in a phone where 5G consumes a lot of power It still seems slight.

The Motorola Razr 2's camera is set for an upgrade, with a 48-megapixel Samsung ISOCELL Bright GM1 sensor in place of the original 16MP rear camera. Look for the front camera to jump from a 5MP shooter to a 20MP selfie cam.

According to XDA, the Motorola Razr 2 will ship with Android 10, not Android 11. The latter version is currently available as a developer preview, and Google is targeting an Android 11 release by the end of summer.

The timing is unfortunate given the rumored release date of the Motorola Razr 2. Earlier this month, a Lenovo executive confirmed plans for the Motorola Razr 2 and said the phone will likely appear in September. So it will be a few more months before we know more details about this Razr sequel, including Motorola's plans to improve manufacturing quality and create a true competitor to Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip.
