Stunning Samsung Galaxy S30 design reveals the future of smartphones

While we wait for the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 to make its debut, we got a glimpse, albeit far-fetched, of a fascinating concept design for the Samsung Galaxy S30.

Dubbed the "Samsung Galaxy S30 Laser" by creator AndroidLeo, the concept envisions what the next-generation Galaxy S series will look like. A completely bezel-less display and an array of quad rear cameras seem obvious, but a touchscreen panel on the side of the phone seems rather outlandish.

Much like the Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro 2020, these touch-sensitive panels are envisioned as a replacement for physical keys. The idea is to allow quick controls like phone, notification, and music icons to be placed on the edge of the Galaxy S30. This would eliminate the need for physical buttons, which not only take up space but may also degrade after prolonged use.

Certainly, this is an interesting and noble approach to phone operation. However, the question remains as to how practical such digital buttons would be in the real world. Apple's Touch Bar has divided opinion, and other touch-sensitive controls we've encountered have been rather wishy-washy.

AndroidLeo's concept Galaxy S30 also touts a 6.8-inch 4K AMOLED display, an under-display fingerprint sensor, and what appears to be a 25MP selfie camera below the display.

Speaking of cameras, the rear camera setup consists of a 108MP main camera (found on the Galaxy S20 Ultra), a 16MP telephoto lens, a 13MP ultra-wide camera, and an 8MP UltraMacro sensor. This is an array of cameras to meet all of your smartphone photography needs.

The Samsung Galaxy S30 Laser video does not mention any internal specifications, but it is speculated that this could be the first Samsung phone to feature the Exynos 1000. The chip is likely the result of a collaboration between Samsung and AMD, mixing the former's mobile chip prowess with the latter's graphics technology.

However, there is a good chance that it will be used in the next generation of Galaxy phones and could bring enough graphics performance to allow the phones to run games with more console-like graphics and fidelity.

The Galaxy S20 phone, while impressive, is definitely not a groundbreaking upgrade over the Galaxy S10 phone. Therefore, with the Galaxy S30, there is room for Samsung to pull out a truly special phone and possibly draw inspiration from some of the ideas seen in this concept design.

And given that the iPhone 12 is becoming an impressive smartphone with a 120Hz display and a camera suite derived from the iPad Pro 2020, Samsung will need to bring its A-game to the 2021 phone.
