Disney Plus just gave me a reason to subscribe again — here's the reason

Simpsons fans were yelling "D'oh!" when Disney Plus launched; early seasons of The Simpsons, which aired before the rise of HDTV, were streamed in a 16:9 aspect ratio.

This was a very infuriating blunder (FX had experienced this before and Disney should have known) and led to the cancellation of the Disney Plus contract when "The Mandalorian" ended. Thankfully, the long "Treehouse of Horror" is coming to an end.

Today (May 20), as part of a big National Streaming Day promotion, Disney gave me a date to re-subscribe to Disney Plus: on May 28, Disney Plus will finally be able to get an episode of the mis-trimmed classic The Simpsons Correction. In a tweet, @DisneyPlus said, "The original 4:3 aspect ratio episode will appear on #DisneyPlus on May 28."

Confused as to why the aspect ratio is so important? The Simpsons is famous (in some circles) for making good use of the entire screen, with extra jokes in the background elements. For example, the shot below is from Disney Plus's introduction of the Duff Beer factory tour.

What you don't see there--because of the forced cropping of the aspect ratio to 16:9--is that each tub of duff beer comes from the same entire duff pipe.

Moments like this have forced me to postpone the Ultimate Simpsons Marathon, which I have been wanting to do for some time now. However, on Thursday, May 29, I reopened my Disney Plus contract.

It's a great opportunity to see all the Simpsons films.

The list of Disney Plus releases for 2020 doesn't stop there. Below is the list of films for Disney Plus subscribers this year.
