Massive Apple Glass Leak reveals name, price and possible release date

Apple Glasses rumors have been ramping up in recent weeks, and today we get our best look yet at the elusive AR lenses, courtesy of one of the most high-profile Apple leakers of late.

After teasing us with his information on Apple Glasses last week, Front Page Tech host Jon Prosser released a video this morning sharing everything he knows about one of "Apple's most mysterious products."

The Apple Glass prototype Prosser says he saw appears to be a pair of "unintimidating" glasses made of plastic. The right temple has a LiDAR scanner, but no other cameras are included for privacy reasons (although that could change).

Both lenses have displays with an interface called "Starboard," which can be controlled by gesturing on the frame or using your hands in front of the frame. However, only the wearer himself can see the display, and a passerby would not know that they are high-tech glasses.

According to Prosser, the Apple Glasses will cost $499 and will require a prescription, but will not be offered in a tinted variety. This price seems low considering that Apple's flagship phones and higher-spec wearables cost more, but the leaker has an accurate track record when it comes to prospective prices.

All processing is reportedly done on the iPhone, which may contribute to the lower cost of the lens. In other words, Apple Glass will function more like an accessory to the iPhone than a stand-alone computing device. Prosser compares this processing relationship to that of the first-generation Apple Watch.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Prosser's clarification is his stance that Apple Glass will not be a "life-changing" gadget. In fact, he states that "expectations should be tempered," especially for the debut model. This makes the Apple Glass concept more concrete, which may be the key to its mass adoption.

According to Prosser, the Apple Glass reveal could be positioned as "another one" to be announced after Tim Cook debuts the iPhone 12 and Apple Watch 6 at his fall keynote.

However, if the keynote cannot have members of the media in attendance due to social distance guidelines, Apple reportedly may want to wait until next March.

And even if Apple Glass is announced, it will be many months before it is available for purchase. Prosser suggests that the earliest it could be on the market is the end of 2021.
