Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Leak reveals bad news

One model in Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Note 20 lineup may have major battery issues. The Galaxy Note 20 Plus reportedly runs on a smaller battery than the top-of-the-line Galaxy S20 Ultra.

If true, this is an unfortunate development. However, with another new feature Samsung is working on for the Note 20, we are hoping that battery size will not be such a big issue.

GalaxyClub, which previously revealed the battery capacity of the standard Note 20 to be 4,000 mAh, now claims that the Note 20 Plus will have a 4,500 mAh battery. This is the same size as the Galaxy S20 Plus, but 500 mAh smaller than the 5,000 mAh battery in the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

The 4,500 mAh is an improvement over previous generation Samsung phablets, as the Galaxy Note 10 Plus had a 4,300 mAh battery. In our web surfing battery test, the Galaxy S20 Ultra recorded an excellent duration of 11 hours and 58 minutes. It needs at least 11 hours to make our best smartphone battery life list. The Galaxy Note 10 Plus, on the other hand, averaged 10 hours 47 minutes.

So it's a little disappointing that Galaxy Note users considering an upgrade won't be able to match the S20 Ultra's battery size with a new device. They can always purchase an S20 Ultra instead, but they will have to give up the S Pen stylus that defines the Galaxy Note experience and draws many users to Samsung's Note devices.

However, this low number on paper may not matter in actual use. Previous rumors have said that the Note 20 will feature a LTPO OLED display. The low-temperature polycrystalline oxide display will allow the screen to dynamically change refresh rates without having to stick to two or three presets like most 90Hz or 120Hz phones. In short, this capability and smart software management means that the Note 20 can draw more runtime from a smaller battery than the S20 Ultra's larger capacity battery.

The final version of the Galaxy Note 20, along with the Galaxy Fold 2, will be announced in a couple of months, probably in August; the Fold 2 will share stylus compatibility and hardware such as cameras and chipsets with the Galaxy S20 series. The Fold 2 is expected to feature a futuristic flexible casing, but will not have the Note 20's LTPO display.
