Forget the iPhone12: Apple has a radical new iPhone coming up

The iPhone 12 will have a smaller notch and other design tweaks, but new leaked information suggests that the new iPhone of 2021 may be radically different. In fact, this iPhone may be Apple's first completely portless smartphone.

That's right, no more Lightning ports; there will be no USB-C ports either. But this mystery device may not be the iPhone 13.

Despite international pressure for Apple to ditch the Lightning port and switch to USB-C charging, the company seems to think it would rather have no port than switch." Never USB-C," tech tipster Jon Prosser said on Twitter, backing up earlier reports that the iPhone 13 lineup will feature a model without a single port.

"There will be one portless iPhone model next year," Prosser said. 'Eventually they will all be portless.'

But will it be the iPhone 13, or a different iPhone altogether? In a conversation with Forbes magazine, Prosser said that the portless iPhone will not be a flagship device and Apple may opt for a less expensive model instead. In other words, it could be the rumored iPhone SE Plus.

The iPhone SE Plus is rumored to be released in late 2021 and will have a screen size of 6.1 inches instead of 5.5 inches. This same model may also have a Touch ID sensor built into the display.

Also, while the phone will not technically have a port, Prosser says the phone will have an Apple Smart Connector similar to the iPad Pro. This connector would allow for dock charging and possibly for connecting other accessories.

Prosser, who has provided us with quite a few recent iPhone 12, AirPods Studio, and Apple Watch 6 leaks, also has insight into Apple's plans for 2021 products.

Smartphones without ports have been proposed and envisioned many times, but major manufacturers have yet to deliver. Apple has not moved to USB-C for user convenience and is clinging to its own Lightning port.

In January, however, the European Union voted in favor of a universal charging standard. The details and implementation of this decision have yet to materialize, and Apple is apparently not waiting for it.

While portless iPhones will likely offer wired charging capabilities through the Smart Connector, Apple may double down on wireless charging in future designs.

For example, the once-aborted AirPower wireless charging pad could be revived, which would allow users to charge multiple devices at once.

However, to make the portless iPhone attractive, Apple needs to offer wireless charging that is as fast or faster than wired charging. Currently, the iPhone 11 supports only 7.5 watts for wireless charging. Wired charging, however, is 18 watts.

It seems to make the most sense for Apple to announce the final form of AirPower along with a portless iPhone and market the two as a picture of a cord-free future.
