Stunning iPad air design will make iPad Pro look boring

The iPad Air looks dazzling in this new design mockup. If the actual next Air looks anything like this, it will prove to be a strong competitor in the tablet market, even against Apple's own iPad Pro.

The renderings you can see on this page are from Svetapple (via Notebookcheck). iPad Air is often overlooked in favor of its cheaper, more upscale sibling, but these designs show how Apple has made this mid-range tablet shows how well it can stand out from the crowd.

Svetapple's design has several ways to make this iPad Air look different while still inheriting the best parts of the iPad Pro. This includes the bezels, which are thin like Apple's top-of-the-line tablets, but white instead of silver. The size has been increased from 10.5" to 11", the same size as the smaller iPad Pro model.

Since the standard iPad jumped in size from 9.7" to 10.2" last year, this increase in size will solidify the iPad Air's status as a high-spec product and make it worth the price Svetapr proposes: €599 ($647, 530 pounds equivalent).

Other components are the same or similar to the existing iPad Air. The design uses an LCD display to keep theoretical costs down, but now offers compatibility with the Apple Pencil 2 with wireless magnetic charging. The rear camera remains single-sensor, but an LED flash has been added.

The processor for this design is the A12X with 4GB RAM. This is the setup used in the 2018 and 2019 iPad Pro models (the 2020 version uses the A12Z) and should provide adequate computing power for everyday users.

While some of these concepts are unlikely to make it into the next iPad Air, they are not entirely unfounded. We have long heard rumors that Apple is trying to bring back Touch ID as an under-display scanner, including on the next iPad Air. If Apple could add this technology to some of its iPad series, it would greatly strengthen its lead in this area.

One thing we are not sure about is SvetApple's inclusion of a USB-C port in this concept. iPad Pro has been using USB-C connectivity since 2018. However, Apple has yet to include this in any other tablet. While it would be great for the new iPad Air to be able to charge and transfer data using essentially the same connector as all other devices, there is still a good chance that Apple will stick with its own Lightning connector.

As for when the actual iPad Air 2020 will arrive, it is not certain. Upgraded versions of the standard iPad and iPad Mini are apparently scheduled to arrive at the end of the year and early 2021, respectively, but there is no information yet on when the new iPad Air will arrive.
