Samsung's Galaxy Fold will launch a special edition as a last hurrah before we see the Galaxy Fold 2. It will not include any new features, but will have a significant price reduction.

This is the latest in a series of Samsung-related leaks from Ross Young, a display analyst respected by other major smartphone leakers. His tweet, which can be read below, reveals a headline price cut from $1,980 to $1,099.

While it seems a bit sneaky for Samsung to sell old inventory under a new name in order to empty its warehouse, the $900 price drop actually makes a bit more sense. Plus, getting this limited product (only 55,000 units will be sold worldwide) might be attractive to phone enthusiasts. Then again, for $300 more, you can get a more capable foldable in the form of the $1,400 Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or, if you want the best of what Samsung currently offers, the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

According to Young, it is still unfortunate that the only difference between the original Galaxy Fold and the Special Edition is price. We liked the large built-in display and multitasking opportunities offered by the original Fold, but had issues with camera performance and the size of the closed device.

The $2,000 price tag is certainly too high for many people to pay for a phone in the first place, let alone one with such glaring flaws as the first Galaxy Fold. But again, the lower price makes those problems a little more acceptable.

However, we also heard rumors of the Samsung Galaxy Fold Lite, which is expected to be released along with the Galaxy Fold 2. It will be priced the same as this supposed Galaxy Fold Special Edition, but will feature newer components, including a Snapdragon 865 chipset and a new external display design that is closer to the Z Flip than the original Fold. If you can spend $1,099 for a new foldable phone, you may want to wait for the Galaxy Fold Lite.
