Forget Samsung Galaxy Fold 2: wacky LG wings will have a rotating display

If you thought foldable phones like the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 were the hottest thing in smartphones right now, LG wants a word. New reports reveal that the Korean company is working on a new form of smartphone with a rotating display.

Korean site ETNews (via AndroidCentral) broke the news and provided the image above. The smartphone is codenamed "Wing" and is expected to be released later this year.

The LG Wing's main rotating display is a 6.8-inch panel, the same size as the company's recently released LG Velvet, a phone that focuses more on design than specs. However, when the display is rotated 90 degrees, a square 4-inch secondary touch display appears, which the user controls. In this state, the secondary display protrudes from the bottom or sides of the main display, allowing the phone to be used horizontally or vertically, according to the company.

A phone with a pop-up camera or other mechanism such as a slider would be much heavier than a standard phone, but could be more practical. An example of how this can be useful for wings is in photo editing. The image being worked on would be displayed on the main screen, with editing options on a secondary display below. You can also watch a video on one screen while searching for something on the other.

Like the Velvet, the Wing is said to use the Snapdragon 765 chipset, which is not as powerful as the 865 found in premium flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S20 and OnePlus 8, but is still capable of running most It should be sufficient to run applications; the 765 is a 5G-enabled chipset, which means that Wing will be compatible with 5G networks below 6 GHz.

The phone is also said to have a 64MP main camera sensor, which would be larger than the Velvet's 48MP sensor; other cameras on the Wing are unknown, but reports indicate a triple camera array, with the Velvet having an 8 MP ultrawide sensor and a 5MP depth sensor.Velvet also has a 16MP front camera in a waterdrop notch, which we speculate will also appear on this new phone.

Folding phones that offer a large screen in a relatively small footprint are certainly attractive. But whether open or closed, the foldable behaves like a regular phone or tablet. Assuming this LG design is accurate and eventually launched, it will offer a fresh user experience that will be very useful for certain customers.
