Samsung's Galaxy Note 20 could be one of the best smartphone displays ever, with an increase in size and resolution over the Note 10 and a high refresh rate panel.

This is according to Ross Young, a supply chain expert who regularly posts leaked information on Galaxy phones. His latest tweet details the display specifications for both the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Plus.

According to Young, the Galaxy Note 20's display will increase to 6.42 inches from the Galaxy Note 10's 6.3-inch panel. To maintain sharpness with this size increase, the resolution of the 19.5:9 aspect ratio display will be 2345 x 1084, with a pixel density of 404 per inch.

The Galaxy Note 20 Plus is expected to have a 6.87-inch display, surpassing the Galaxy Note 10 Plus' 6.8-inch AMOLED display. Young noted that Samsung will increase the resolution of the display to 2096 x 1444, which is 497 ppi. This should result in a very sharp display with an aspect ratio of 19.3:9.

Both Galaxy Note 20 models will also feature the 120 Hz refresh rate found on the Galaxy S20 Plus and other models, but with lower power consumption and a variable refresh rate.

This means that the display can automatically adjust the refresh rate for apps that support higher refresh rates and those that do not, thereby saving battery life. Such a feature has been seen on the Google Pixel 4 with a 90 Hz refresh rate display, which had some issues at launch and often reverted to 60 Hz on low brightness settings.

However, Young added an important caveat the next day that the 120Hz display may be exclusive to the larger Galaxy Note 20 Plus. He noted that the standard Note 20 will feature a 60Hz refresh rate LTPO display.

Given Apple's iPhone 12 feature set and refreshed design, the Galaxy Note 20 would need to be a pretty impressive device to compete with the upcoming iPhone.

New leaks have indicated that the iPhone 12 will feature a 120Hz ProMotion display, which not only promises a high refresh rate, but also a display that can dynamically adjust between 60Hz and 120Hz. If the Galaxy Note 20 launches in August, it could set itself apart from the iPhone 12 by being the first to offer such smart screen technology. In a recent episode of Front Page Tech, host John Prosser pointed out that ProMotion too great an impact on battery life, he argues that Apple may discontinue ProMotion.

According to Young, there is no Galaxy Note 20 Ultra variant.

As it stands, the Galaxy S20 Ultra will remain the only "ultra" phone among Samsung's flagship smartphones. However, Young notes that the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 will effectively be the next Ultra phone.
