Google Pixel5 processor may have just been revealed

The Google Pixel 5 CPU may be in sight. While not confirmed, piecing together the new announcement from Qualcomm and other rumors gives us a clearer picture of Google's next phone.

That announcement was about a new mid-range 5G-capable chipset, dubbed the Snapdragon 768G. This replaces the current 765G CPU that was rumored to be used in the Pixel 5. Thus, as TechRadar points out, it makes sense for Google to adopt the latest chips in this line for its next phone.

Even if Google were planning to use older chips, the motherboard socket and software used to run the 768G is identical to that used in the 765G. This would give Google the option of easily upgrading the phone in time for launch, or releasing an enhanced version of the Pixel 5 at a later date.

Also, the 768G supports 120Hz displays by default, a feature currently only available on flagships such as the Samsung Galaxy S20 and OnePlus 8 Pro. The Pixel 4's display was 90Hz, so it is unlikely that Google will be able to release an enhanced version of this year's would not be surprised if the refresh rate is raised again for the flagship Pixel.

Google has used Qualcomm's top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8 series chips in previous Pixel phones, including the Snapdragon 855 in the Pixel 4 and the Snapdragon 845 in the Pixel 3. We had expected the Pixel 5 to use the Snapdragon 865, which has been used in most other flagships released this year, but rumors have indicated that it will use a less powerful chip, possibly making the phone cheaper and thus less expensive to compete with the This is likely to make it a more attractive proposition compared to the Galaxy S20 and iPhone 12 phones.

The Pixel 3a, on the other hand, uses the Snapdragon 670, another step down in power from the 7 series chips. Presumably, Google's next phone, the Pixel 4a, which will be available in a few weeks, will have a different 6-series CPU.

The 768G is said to be better suited for gaming, with a new Adreno 620 GPU, higher CPU clock speeds, and drivers that can be easily updated for further optimization (hence the G in the name.) The Pixel 5 is likely not focused on gaming, but Google will appreciate Qualcomm's improvements, as it also offers the Stadia game streaming service.

Under normal circumstances, the Pixel 5 would launch around October of this year. However, the coronavirus outbreak could delay Google's flagship.
