Samsung Galaxy S30 camera leak could be bad news for iPhone12

Samsung's Galaxy S30 could have an even larger sensor than the Galaxy S20 Ultra's 108MP main camera (and all its rivals).

SamMobile found a post on the Clien.net forums where we learn that Samsung is currently experimenting for the next Galaxy S series smartphone.

The centerpiece now is the rumored 150MP main camera. We have heard rumors before that Samsung is developing a sensor for the S30 that will surpass the 108MP camera used in the S20 Ultra. This new sensor is not likely to be ready for the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 later this year, but expect 150MP to be an incredibly large sensor size in 2021.

Other sensors mentioned in this post include a 16MP ultra-wide camera, a 64MP telephoto camera, a time-of-flight depth sensor, and a possible 12MP macro camera. This would be the first time a macro lens has been used in the Galaxy S series, as they are primarily used in the less expensive A series.

S20 Ultra owners have reported problems with the $1,400 phone's autofocus system, making it difficult to get the most out of the phone's very valuable camera. Fortunately for future S30 owners, the post claims that the laser autofocus has been omitted. We hope that Samsung will replace it with a more reliable focus method.

Interestingly, two versions of the S30 are currently being tested with slightly different implementations of optical image stabilization (OIS): the first has OIS on the main camera, telephoto camera, and selfie camera; the second has OIS on the main camera, telephoto camera, and ultra-wide camera OIS is installed on the main camera, the telephoto camera, and the ultra-wide camera. Since smartphone owners use the various lenses on their phones with varying frequency, perhaps Samsung is waiting for data on whether customers prefer a stabilized selfie camera or an ultrawide camera before settling on one design.

Of course, this could all change; the Galaxy S30 likely won't appear until February 2021, and possibly later if Samsung's plans are disrupted by various coronavirus-related complications.

In the meantime, however, we look forward to the Galaxy Note 20. The next model in Samsung's phablet series with a stylus is likely to arrive in August, with similar camera technology as the Galaxy S20 series, plus other enhancements such as 120Hz display refresh rates, larger batteries, and 5G on all models

The S20 is also expected to be the first Galaxy S20 model to be released in the United States.
