Apple's latest version of iOS 13 makes it easier to share information with emergency services by automatically sharing a medical ID when making an emergency call.

Apple will roll out iOS 13.5 over the next couple of weeks, allowing users to configure their iPhones to share any information stored in their medical ID with emergency services.

This feature will work when users dial 911 in areas that support the use of Enhanced Emergency Data service, which provides the caller's location information to the 911 dispatcher. A connected Apple Watch can be configured to do the same.

The data that will be shared is anything an iPhone user would want to put in their Medical ID. As part of Apple's native Health app, Medical ID serves as a repository for information such as blood type, any pre-existing medical conditions the user may have, medical and food allergies, emergency contact information, etc.

Other data such as height, weight, and medications taken can also be added. And since all of this data is encrypted within a modern iPhone like the iPhone 11 Pro, those who value their privacy can rest assured.

Combined with the caller location information provided by the Enhanced Emergency Data service, Medical ID data can be shared with emergency services to provide them with all the information they need to know about a patient before emergency personnel arrive at the patient's location. This can be done, for example, by allowing paramedics to know the location of an accident or incident. This means that when paramedics arrive at the scene of an accident or injury, for example, they will be better equipped to provide emergency medical care.

The clever thing about this new feature is that it works with the Apple Watch Series 5's fall detection feature. This means that if someone falls, 911 is automatically notified and medical ID data is shared. This could provide necessary information to rescue teams even if the victim is unable to speak.
