Samsung Galaxy S30 Processor revealed in Snapdragon 875 leak

A new leak has revealed the CPU that is said to be featured in the Samsung Galaxy S30 and many other top Android phones in 2021.

Details of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 875 were passed along via one of 91Mobiles' readers. We don't know how reliable a source this reader is, but the information makes sense, at least given the precedent of the Snapdragon 865 in this year's Android flagship.

The chips will be manufactured by Taiwanese semiconductor foundry TSMC, which also makes chips for Apple, as the technology needed to produce the latest CPUs is only available to a few companies.

The 875 will be Qualcomm's first 5-nanometer (nm) chip, which compared to the 7nm process used in the Snapdragon 865 and Apple's A13 Bionic will either reduce the total size of the CPU or have more transistors in the same silicon footprint.

In any case, the total size of the CPU will be reduced.

Either way, this will lead to improved performance and power efficiency. The Snapdragon 875 will also include an X60 5G modem for 5G connectivity, but it is unclear if this will be optional or integrated like the X50 on the 865. What we do know is that the X60 will work with both mmWave and sub6Ghz 5G versions, so there is no need to worry about taking a phone with the 875 to areas that do not support certain versions. [Qualcomm is not alone in developing new high-density chips; Apple's A14 CPU in the iPhone 12 is rumored to use a 5nm process, and Samsung's upcoming Exynos CPU is likely to be included in Galaxy S30 models sold outside the US.

The new Snapdragon chips will likely appear in December, when Qualcomm has held previous launch events. This is subject to change due to coronavirus-related disruptions, so we will have to wait for an official announcement from Qualcomm.
