Google Pixel4a Design Leak — Much better than iPhone SE

A new concept rendering of the Google Pixel 4a shows how Google's next budget phone could blend a familiar rear design with a front that looks much more modern than Apple's iPhone SE.

The latest design is the result of a collaboration between Pigtou and xleaks, created from the back of leaked CAD drawings of what is set to be Google's next phone. And the design lends credence to the idea that the Pixel 4a will feature a punch-hole selfie camera and a square rear camera module.

We have previously seen leaked information showing off a similar design for the Pixel 4a, and that device had a nearly bezel-less display, a departure from the older Pixel 3a design. one of the few drawbacks of the iPhone SE is that Apple is using the older iPhone 8 design, which was adapted from the iPhone 8, and the bezels around the screen are large.

These Pixel 4a designs also indicate the possible return of the capacitive fingerprint scanner on the back, which both the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL abandoned for the biometric security of a face scan. iPhone SE's front Touch ID sensor is in a more convenient location but the rear fingerprint scanner on previous Pixel phones was praised for its responsiveness.

Other details in these new renderings show familiar Pixel design cues, from the pair of speaker holes at the bottom edge of the phone to the pastel-colored power button that is a feature of more recent Pixel phones.

Pigtou and xleaks renderings show that the Pixel 4a's rear camera module is a single camera rather than dual-lens. This suggests that the Pixel 4a will rely on software for smartphone photography, which should include a Night Sight mode that the iPhone SE lacks.

There is not much more information that can be drawn from this design. However, leaks and rumors that have circulated so far suggest that the Pixel 4a will be powered by a mid-tier Snapdragon 765 chip, with a standard 60Hz refresh rate, as opposed to the iPhone SE's faster A13 Bionic chip but smaller 4.7-inch screen, 5.83 inch OLED display.

If the Pixel 4a adheres to the previous model's $400 price tag, it has a good chance of offering solid performance, high-quality photos, and a properly packaged device at a price competitive with Apple's budget devices.
