A dark shadow looms over sunny California tonight as we watch "Penny Dreadful: City of Angels" Episode 2 in just a few minutes. The supernatural spin-off of the gothic horror series "Penny Dreadful" premieres this Sunday night on Showtime, taking place from Victorian England to Los Angeles.

"Penny Dreadful": according to creator John Logan, "City of Angels" is a "spiritual descendant" of the original series. It is set in 1938, about 50 years after the original series, during the Golden Age of Hollywood. The story will incorporate Mexican-American folklore and tackle race, political extremism, and "the social and personal costs of creating a great modern metropolis," Logan told EW.

Natalie Dormer from "Game of Thrones" will play Magda, a supernatural demon and sister of Santa Muerte, the Holy Angel of Death. Magda believes that humanity is inherently evil and uses her shape-shifting abilities to prove it.

Also central to Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto), the LAPD's first Mexican-American detective. He becomes embroiled in a gruesome murder case related to Dia de los Muertos, Mexico's Day of the Dead. Meanwhile, he struggles with racism and gentrification, as the construction of a new highway threatens to displace his family and neighbors.

The original "Penny Dreadful" ran for three seasons and starred Eva Green as Vanessa Ives, a heroine who battles underworld enemies. The term "penny dreadful" refers to a type of 19th century British publication full of sensational fiction. The original show featured characters from 19th century English and Irish Gothic novels, including Dorian Gray, Count Dracula, Victor Frankenstein, and Dr. Jekyll.
