Have you ever wanted to correct a typo you sent in iMessage or change the word "duck" to its true meaning? Apple may have a solution for you soon.

According to an Apple patent application posted at the USPTO and discovered by AppleInsider, Apple is working on new ways for users to interact with iMessage texts. Most notable among these is the possibility of being able to edit messages, which would be a welcome upgrade for users who are prone to typos.

The patent image shows the familiar contextual menu that appears when you long-press iMessage. However, this new version of the menu also includes an "edit" button, providing a quick way to correct mistakes or add additional context to a message.

However, don't expect this to be a tool for undoing nasty messages. According to the patent image, edited messages will be marked as such, and people may be able to see a revision history of all iMessages that have changed via the "Show Edits" option.

Apple's patent also outlines new full-screen special effects (such as the one that plays when you text someone "Congratulations") and improved use of Apple Pay within texts.

Since this is just a patent, there is no guarantee that these improved iMessage features will make it into iOS 14 or future software updates. However, the ability to edit texts would be one of the most significant upgrades to Apple's texting platform to date and would allow it to better compete with third-party options.
