Microsoft Build 2020 is the latest edition of the annual developer conference, showcasing everything from cloud-based software and service creation tools to the next version of Windows 10. And in the past, it has been used to showcase Microsoft hardware like the HoloLens augmented reality (AR) headset.

Build 2020 was supposed to be another big event in Seattle for Microsoft and developers to mark their calendars. However, Microsoft decided to develop Build 2020 into a digital event with a virtual showcase and keynotes streamed live, effectively putting all of the company's technology and cloud skills to work.

While tickets to the physical Build conference typically cost thousands of dollars, Microsoft is offering free access to the virtual Microsoft Build 2020. Here's everything you need to know about Build 2020, including the main dates, how to register, and expected announcements.

Microsoft Build 2020 is a 48-hour virtual event that kicks off on May 19 at 8 a.m. Pacific Standard Time. New Yorkers and East Coast tech enthusiasts can attend the event starting at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time.

Thereafter, keynotes, workshops, and presentations will continue through May 21. So it's best to stock up on plenty of food and snacks and have your notepad ready.

Registering for Build 2020 is very easy: just go to mybuild.microsoft.com and click or tap the "register now" button. mybuild.microsoft.com and click or tap the "register now" button. Simply click or tap to go to the registration page and sign up for Build 2020 for free.

You will need to log in with your existing Microsoft account or sign in with your work or school account; if you do not have a Microsoft account, you can create one.

Once you sign in or create a new account, you will be prompted to send a code or continue without a code. If you do not have a code, you must proceed to register without a code, enter your information, accept the various terms and conditions, and continue.

You will then need to create a profile detailing your work and interests. You will then be presented with a registration summary with your account ID.

The exact details of how to watch Build 2020 and all its keynotes and sessions have not yet been fully revealed by Microsoft. It is certain that live streams will be available on Microsoft's Build 2020 website and possibly YouTube, and recorded sessions may be available on demand from the Build 2020 website.

The registration confirmation email should also include a link to access the virtual Build 2020 on May 19.

Microsoft has not confirmed what they will talk about at Build 2020. However, last year's Build introduced the Chromium-based Edge browser, improvements to Cortana, and even AR games. So expect many similar new features to be added to Microsoft's broad portfolio.

Details on how Microsoft's Project xCloud game streaming service will be integrated into Xbox Series X and Windows 10, and how the cloud platform behind it will be leveraged by developers I wouldn't be surprised if they do. We also expect AI and the so-called Internet of Things (IoT) to feature heavily, as Microsoft will provide tools for developers to develop smart devices, services, and bots on its ecosystem and platform.

Expect many workshops on how these developer tools and services are used and case studies on how something like AI can help streamline business logistics. And Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's keynote speech should give us an idea of what to expect from Microsoft in the next 12 months.

Build is usually focused on services and software, so hardware announcements are not expected. However, there are rumors that Microsoft is working on the Surface Go 2 and Surface Book 3, which could be revealed at Build 2020 as devices for developers to work on and develop apps.

We also expect to get a glimpse of what Microsoft has planned for Windows 10X, the dual-screening of its main OS, and how it will work on the Surface Neo and Surface Duo.
