The iPhone SE 2020 is a great phone considering its $399 price. However, even though this phone is priced for everyone, it is not designed for everyone. Especially because of its relatively small 4.7" display.

Maybe it's my old eyes, but after trading in my 6.7" monster iPhone 11 Pro Max for a week, the screen felt much smaller. So you can see why the larger iPhone SE is so appealing.

Unfortunately, one analyst believes that Apple will not release the iPhone SE Plus until late 2021, long after the release of the iPhone 12. That's a long time to wait. But given the state of the economy, it would be foolish for Apple to wait that long.

Here's why I think the iPhone SE Plus will be the budget phone to beat if Apple pulls the trigger sooner rather than later.

The iPhone SE Plus will likely have the same 5.5-inch display as the iPhone 8 Plus. I remember reviewing both the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, and I much preferred the iPhone 8 Plus.

A 5.5-inch panel on the iPhone SE Plus would make video viewing more immersive, typing easier, and reading on an extension less taxing. If Apple is really waiting for the iPhone SE Plus to be released next year, we would like to see a slimmer bezel design. That would provide a screen closer to 6 inches in the same size form factor.

While reviewing the iPhone SE, I noticed that my daughter had to get really close to me to take portraits. With a second lens, the bokeh effect can be achieved in hardware as well as software. In the age of social distance, one should avoid getting closer than 6 feet from the subject.

Another advantage is, of course, the 2x optical zoom. This allows you to get closer to what you are photographing. the digital zoom on the iPhone SE Plus is quite good, but nothing beats a second dedicated lens.

Battery results for the iPhone SE were less than stellar; the 1,821 mAh battery built into Apple's entry-level phone lasted an average of only 9 hours and 18 minutes. The handsets on our list of best phone battery life all lasted 11 hours or more.

Assuming the iPhone SE Plus has the same size battery, the capacity jumps to 2,675 mAh. For comparison, the iPhone 8 was 9:54 in a slightly older version of the web surfing battery test, while the iPhone 8 Plus was 11:16. Therefore, similar durability can be expected from the iPhone SE Plus.

Before Apple discontinued the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, the iPhone 8 cost $449 and the iPhone 8 Plus cost $549. Therefore, if Apple decides to launch the iPhone SE Plus, it will likely be priced $100 more than the iPhone SE. $499 is a fair price?

I would say yes, given that to get an affordable large-screen phone from Apple, one would have to step up to the iPhone XR, which currently costs $599. iPhone XR has an A12 Bionic processor, a large 6.1-inch screen and Face ID.

The iPhone SE Plus has not been confirmed, but based on leaks, rumors, and the expected success of the regular iPhone SE, we could see Apple ready to release an iPhone SE Plus within the next 12 months. And while I understand that Apple does not want to spoil the iPhone 12 party this fall, it will not wait that long in early 2021 to release the iPhone SE's big brother.

Once the iPhone SE Plus arrives, it will bring attention to all mid-range Android phones, including the upcoming Google Pixel 4a.
