The latest Windows update may be more of a tune-up than an overhaul, as it promises to make Windows run faster on older laptops. The upcoming Windows 10 May 2020 Update will change the way Windows Search indexes and reduces the high disk usage that used to slow performance on older laptops with traditional hard drives.

However, if the HDD is in active use for transferring or deleting files, this update will slow or stop the indexing process. As a result, there will be less slowdown when using a Windows 10 machine and less impact when doing things that conflict with the indexing process.

According to tests conducted by Windows Latest, the new feature appears to work as advertised, providing an overall faster experience and working well on several different hardware configurations.

This new indexing method will be part of the Windows 10 May 2020 Update that will be distributed next month.

Other improvements to be rolled out next month include changes to the Cortana voice assistant that will separate the assistant from standard desktop search and open text-based chat dialogues without speaking aloud.

Another adjustment is the addition of Bing Image Search, which allows users to take screenshots and find more information about images using Microsoft's search engine.

All of these changes are part of the Windows Update scheduled for May 2020, also known as Windows 10 20H1 or Windows 10 build 2004. This update has already been completed and is available to some testers and will be available to the general public next month.
