OnePlus8Pro display is turning green - here's why

The OnePlus 8 Pro is currently plagued by an unusual display issue; OnePlus is working on an update to resolve this, but for now, at least on some devices, dark images appear oddly green.

As reported on the OnePlus forums (via TechRadar), owners of the company's latest flagship have noticed a green tint when in low light settings. Considering how new this device is and how OnePlus has been hyping how good the OnePlus 8 Pro's display is, this could be a big problem.

Despite manufacturers' best efforts, smartphones are not always the same. This issue is not something that all OnePlus users will eventually face, and may simply be the result of a lot of low-quality display components. Similarly, all OLED displays perform worst at low brightness and struggle to produce large, uniform blocks of color. However, this appears to be a more serious problem than usual.

Tom's Guide's review of the OnePlus 8 Pro did not find these problems; TG Global Editor-in-Chief Mark Spoonauer praised the panel's color, brightness, and smooth 120 Hz refresh rate.

I reproduced the issue on my own OnePlus 8 Pro review unit and found similar results to those reported by users (see image above).

While the 8 Pro display by itself seemed fine, when compared to my Huawei P40 Pro (with Chrome installed via APK file), the display shows a completely different kind of "black" on Chrome's No Internet error page The display is showing a completely different kind of "black" on the Chrome No Internet error page. Screenshots were taken on both models and compared on a third display to confirm that the two browser pages are displayed in the same color.

You may remember that earlier this month, Samsung's Galaxy S20 Ultra was plagued by a similar issue (via AndroidCentral), although all OnePlus 8 Pro models use the same Snapdragon chip as the S20 Ultra, does not help to fully diagnose this problem.

Samsung Display manufactures screens for both Samsung smartphones and smartphones from other manufacturers, including OnePlus, and both run on Android 10, albeit via different launchers, One UI and OxygenOS. These similarities mean that without further investigation, it is difficult to determine whether it is a software or hardware issue.

What might help (or make it worse) is the "DC Dimming" option in the OnePlus Laboratory section of the Settings menu. This is an experimental feature that changes the brightness by varying the current in the display. While some users report that it helps minimize tints, this setting includes a warning that using this feature may cause chromatic aberration, which may be related to the loss of black color detail (called "black crash") reported by forum users is a possible cause of the problem.

However, OnePlus is working on this issue; OnePlus values user feedback and is committed to providing the best smartphone experience," the company said in a statement.

"Our team is currently investigating these reports to identify the best solution for our users and will issue an update when ready. We are working on a solution for the green tint in the next OTA," OnePlus added.

Let's hope this update is all it takes. Any hardware issues with a phone that has been on the market for less than a month could do a lot of damage to OnePlus' almost stellar reputation.
