Apple Watch 6 design leak is a big disappointment

The Apple Watch 6 will not look much different from its predecessor, the Apple Watch Series 5, or from previous versions of Apple's smartwatch.

At least, that's what tech leaker John Prosser says. That smartwatch is almost identical to the Apple Watch Series 5, with the main changes occurring inside the watch.

Other rumors suggest that the Apple Watch Series 6 could have a circular design, and there are concept designs showing what such an Apple Watch could look like.

And a patent filed by Apple suggested that the next-generation Apple Watch could do away with the "digital crown" on the side of the watch and use an optical sensor that is flush with the case. However, if Prosser's prediction proves correct, these rumors will not come true with the Apple Watch Series 6.

However, it is possible that the next Apple Watch will switch from an OLED display to a micro-LED screen. If this happens, it could result in a slimmer and more power efficient Apple Watch, which might retain the square shape of the previous model, but it could still be a significant upgrade. The use of this screen technology could also extend the lifespan of the next Apple Watch, as microLED displays have higher brightness and do not suffer from luminance decay issues like OLED panels.

Since its debut in 2015, the Apple Watch has not changed much in appearance. In the five years since its launch, Apple has improved the casing and considerably improved the internal specifications and features.

However, the Apple Watch's rounded, square body and face and sleek digital crown have remained constant over the past half-century. It's very easy to spot the Apple Watch among the crowd of other best smartwatches and best fitness trackers.

The current Apple Watch design has proven to be popular and has received critical acclaim as one of the best smartwatches. So "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" may be a wise move for Apple.

But that's not to say that the Apple Watch Series 6 won't be an interesting smartwatch. It will have enhanced sleep tracking and blood oxygen tracking capabilities. Combined, these additional features will help users better manage their health.

Apple has already included ECG functionality from the Apple Watch Series 4, positioning the Apple Watch as a powerful health tracking wearable.
