The iPhone 12 is not the only major product announcement Apple is planning for the end of 2020. New versions of the iMac and iPad Air are planned for later this year, according to a new report out of China.

Citing information obtained from Apple's supply chain, China Times predicts that Apple will begin mass production of the 23-inch iMac and 11-inch iPad Air during the third quarter of this year. If that happens, both products will be in retail stores in time for the year-end sales season. Japanese blog Mac Okatara first spotted the China Times article.

The new iMac is the bigger deal of the two potential product releases disclosed in the report. Apple last updated its iMac lineup more than a year ago, adding an eight-core Intel 9th generation processor to the all-in-one desktop, along with enhanced graphics. In fact, Apple has stuck with essentially the same design since 2012.

The mention of the 23-inch iMac sparked hopes that a redesign was on the way. After all, the iMac currently comes in 21.5-inch and 27-inch versions, and while Apple could simply copy the design of these two models with 23-inch screens, it is possible that Apple could shrink the bezel around the iMac display so that the larger panel could be squeezed into the current iMac's footprint in some scenarios.

The China Times does not say much about the potential specs of this 23-inch Mac, but it says even less about the 11-inch iPad Air that will apparently join Apple's tablet lineup later this year. This would mean a larger screen for the Air, which is currently marketed as a 10.5-inch tablet. Apple's iPad Pro (the next step up from the Air) is available in three sizes, but the first generation of Pro tablets featured an 11-inch model.

The China Times has positioned these rumored products in the same class as the iPhone SE, i.e., relatively inexpensive versions of Apple's flagship products intended to broaden the respective appeal of the iMac and iPad Air.

Rumored to ship in late 2020, it remains to be seen how accurate this report is, or whether the coronavirus pandemic that has disrupted Apple's smartphone plans will have any impact on desktops and tablets It will.
