The canceled Pixel4A XL just leaked — here's what we might have had

The Google Pixel 4a may have had an XL version at one point during development, but that version definitely does not appear to be available. At the very least, it appears that parts of this cancelled model can be purchased online.

This is based on an eBay listing (via 9to5Google) purporting to sell a "Google Pixel 4a XL Replacement New Battery Back Cover Door". The seller is based in Shenzhen, China, where Foxconn's manufacturing facility is located; Foxconn is Google's partner in the production of Pixel devices, so it is certainly possible that some components have made their way from the factory into private hands.

Not only does this listing claim to be for the larger Pixel 4a and match the "Barely Blue" color option seen in previous leaks, but the internals do not look as expected based on Pixel 4a specs. While we expect only one camera and flash module on the back of the 4a, the back cover has three cutouts in the square camera bump (most visible inside the case), which could point to a second sensor.

The Pixel 4 has two cameras, a main sensor and a telephoto sensor. While an optical zoom camera is not necessarily expected on a phone of this price, Google could have included another type of camera, such as a depth sensor.

The Pixel 3a, the successor to the Pixel 4a, comes in standard and XL, and we assumed that the Pixel 4a would also have an XL version, but rumors did not confirm this. What this eBay listing suggests, assuming it is genuine, is that Google only decided to discontinue the Pixel 4a XL at the last minute and that some components are already in production.

In the single Pixel 4a model we expect to get, we can expect a single camera on the back, ae selfie camera on the front with a punch hole notch, a mid-range Snapdragon 730 CPU, a 5.8-inch OLED display, and a headphone jack, All of this is encased in a polycarbonate shell similar to the Pixel 3a.

We expect the Pixel 4a to be revealed in May, when Google is expected to host its Google I/O 2020 event. Although this physical event was canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak, we should expect Google to hold a digital presentation instead and the phone will be launched shortly after, assuming no production delays due to the outbreak.

The Pixel 4a will face stiff competition from Apple, which is rumored to soon release a competing mid-range iPhone 9 in the same sub-$400 price range.
