iOS14 Design shows biggest iPhone change in 10 years

Apple's iOS 14 is rumored to feature full-fledged widgets in its app suite, and thanks to one design concept, we can get a sense of what it will look like.

The design by Parker Ortolani (via 9to5Mac) serves to hint at what Apple is trying to do, or at least what it should do, with the next version of its mobile operating system. It builds on recent news that Apple is working on adding Android-like widgets to iOS 14.

A feature dubbed "SpringKit" by Ortolani will allow iOS 14 app developers to configure three different versions of their app's icon.

The images show how this will work in Apple's own Weather, Camera, and Activity apps, indicating important facts at a glance and providing quick shortcuts to key features.

Widgets are not entirely new to iOS, and in iOS 13, a swipe to the right takes you to the Today View panel. Unlike Android, however, widgets in iOS 13 cannot be added anywhere on the home screen or anywhere other than the Today View panel.

Now that Android 11 is in development, iOS's support for this feature will allow it to compete with Google OS in terms of user interface flexibility. However, Apple may still decide to ditch the new widgets in favor of other features, as there is time to cut something before the new version of iOS is locked down for bug fixes and final launch preparations.

iOS14 should debut at WWDC, as have previous major updates to iOS and other Apple operating systems. Since this is currently an online-only event that will take place in July, we will probably be waiting a while for the reveal in a virtual keynote. Hopefully, this will not delay the rollout of the new version of iOS, which usually begins with the launch of the new iPhone in the fall.
