Digital Movie Release Date: Everything comes on Demand (2020/4)

Digital movie release date tracking used to be just a way to know when you could download your favorite movie in theaters. But now that movie theaters have closed due to coronavirus concerns, we are seeing a new trend.

More and more movies are now being released digitally ahead of schedule, including those that have just been released in theaters. It is not hard to understand why. People desperately need entertainment, and studios can't make money on empty movie theaters.

Highlights over the next month include TruTV's theatrical version of Impractical Jokers, Like a Boss (with Tiffany Haddish, Rose Byrne, and Salma Hayek), and, great news for the kids, Trolls World Tour and more. Parents looking for something less kid-friendly may want to check out the drag drama "Arkansas," with stars Liam Hemsworth, Vince Vaughn, and Vivica A. Fox.

Even film festivals are going online; SXSW and Amazon just announced a 10-day "online film festival."

Ma, Q, Joe Gatto, and Sal Vulcano appeared on video-on-demand five weeks after their theatrical release. The film combines a fictional story of high school humiliation with a more realistic hidden camera challenge, the content that made their name. And since their childhood melodrama is set in the 1990s, it is a hodgepodge of celebrity cameos, including Paula Abdul, Joey Fatone, and Jaden Smith.

"It Started as Joke" chronicles a decade of the Eugene Millman Comedy Festival. Eugene Millman, the voice of Gene Belcher in Bob's Burgers, has his own alternative comedy festival.

All right, I get it, you all really want to get back into the movies. But what if I told you that someone is trying to do a virtual hookup? Details are sketchy, but if you buy a "virtual ticket," which will be sold through Kino Lorber, you will be able to see this bizarre horror/rom-com film. Eventually, he comes under the scrutiny of Rose, a driving instructor who can talk to beings in the spirit world.

Donnie Yen is back as Wing Chun master Ip Man, this time in San Francisco. In this final chapter of the Ip Man saga, the 1960s protagonist deals with prejudiced and ugly American stereotypes and works things out in the community. Bruce Lee (Danny Chan), a disciple of Ip Man, is also involved in an uncomfortable scene as the local martial arts community is upset that he has opened a Wing Chun school. [Two friends, played by Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne, and a beauty products magnate played by Salma Hayek, clash over control of the boardroom. Critics were not always favorable to the film, but it certainly seems like the kind of comedy we could all use.

In Trolls World Tour, one of the big films that never made it to theaters due to Coronavirus concerns, Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin Timberlake) discover that the Trolls' world is much larger than their own community. In addition, each of the six Troll tribes is into a different kind of music: classical, country, funk, pop, hard rock, and techno. The film features a stellar cast, including Mary J. Blige, Kelly Clarkson, Ron Funches, Sam Rockwell, and Gwen Stefani. However, King Slash and Queen Barb, the hard rock division played by Ozzy Osbourne and Rachel Bloom, seek to completely dominate and destroy the other tribes.

If you're looking for excellent animation, check out this film released last year by GKIDS. It is a brightly colored depiction of a war between two different mutant races, the flame-controlling Varnish and the dimension-traveling Promare. The film is full of super-powered action and even a mecha-robot fight. It is exactly the kind of movie that certain children would eat with a giant ladle.

I wanted to see this at SXSW, but alas, I had to settle for May 5 as the day to see Clark Duke of "Hot Tub Time Machine" and Liam Hemsworth of "The Hunger Games" play drug runners. Of course, nothing could go wrong, because without them, the film wouldn't be possible. Vince Vaughn, John Malkovich, Vivica A. Fox, and Michael Kenneth Williams (yes, that's Omar from THE WIRE) co-star.
