Samsung Galaxy Note 20 leak reveals big camera upgrade

Now that Samsung has included a 108-megapixel camera in the Galaxy S20 Ultra, all eyes are on the upcoming Galaxy Note 20 line to see how the handset maker will improve its innovative (if buggy) imaging hardware.

A leak provided by WinFuture's Roland Quandt and reported by PhoneArena suggests what Samsung is planning; Quandt claims it is an inlay mold used to mold the Galaxy Note 20's back panel He released a photo of the mold. Of particular note is the elongated camera cutout, a thin rectangle that appears to be roughly the same proportion as the module on the back of the S20 Ultra.

The similarity to Samsung's $1,399 Galaxy S20 suggests that at least one Note 20 model may have the same lens, possibly with both the Ultra's 108MP primary sensor and 48MP telephoto optical zoom lens . That would not be surprising, given that Samsung typically reuses the imaging stack from the Galaxy S series for its next Note device, which will be released before the end of the year.

If Samsung does bring the Ultra's refined camera setup to the Note 20, we hope it avoids the glitches that plagued the photography experience on the most expensive S20 this time around. S20 Ultra users have reported that autofocus is choppy and selfies are softness, they reported. About two weeks ago, Samsung released a software update to fix these bugs.

Camera clues aside, Quandt's Galaxy Note 20 leak also sheds light on the general shape of the phone, which seems to retain the sharp, square aesthetic established by the Galaxy Note 10. While the Galaxy S series has become more rounded with each generation, the Note has a more rigid style, a design more suited to a productivity-oriented device.

The Galaxy Note 20 is still months away, though it is expected to be unveiled in late August, usually near the end of summer. Nevertheless, no recent schedule has been set, and the ongoing global pandemic may force the tech giant to delay its plans.
