MacBook Air display issues confirmed by Leaked Apple Notes

Just as Apple has repaired the MacBook Air's keyboard, its beloved notebook has another problem. This problem is actually found in Apple's entire lineup of MacBooks with Retina displays, including the MacBook Pro and 12-inch MacBook, and this information has been leaked by Apple itself.

According to MacRumors, a change in one of Apple's internal service documents has added the MacBook Air to the list of laptops; some Retina displays on the MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro have anti-reflective (AR) coating issues may occur. The report does not specify which versions of the MacBook Air are affected.

The problem is called "stain-gate" and examples are posted on this site; it is not known which MacBook Air models are affected, and one can only hope that it is not the MacBook Air 2020 model that was just announced last week.

In any case, if your MacBook Air is displaying this distorted display issue, please contact Apple's support team. Since all Apple Stores and many authorized repair providers are closed, you should start at the MacBook Air page of the Apple Support site.

According to the report, Apple has offered a repair program for this issue for some time, but has done so quietly, without outlining it on the Apple website. The program initially only supported MacBook Pro (13-inch and 15-inch, 2015-2017) and 12-inch MacBooks of the same span.
