This Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 design is what we want

Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip is an important step forward for Samsung's foldable phones and the industry as a whole. However, while the Z Flip is exciting, it is far from perfect, and some reports suggest that Samsung is trying to further refine its foldable design with a successor to last year's Galaxy Fold.

Artist Waqar Khan, with the help of German tech blog WindowsUnited, created a series of renderings of what Samsung's Galaxy Fold 2 might look like. And they captured our imagination.

A translated version of the WindowsUnited article states that Kahn's mockups are based on "previous patent documents, rumors, and inside information." Patent documents do not necessarily reflect the final product, and much of what Kahn proposes here appears to be a natural progression from the design first established in the Galaxy Fold and iterated in the Z Flip.

This is not to say that these renderings are not exciting. Khan's vision of the Galaxy Fold 2 addresses some of the less complimentary quirks of the first model, such as the inability to fold flat, the huge camera cutout on the inner display, and the large bezels above and below the outer screen. If the next generation Fold looks like this, it will be a beautiful device.

The approach here is generally clean and seems to be approaching the ideal of what a foldable phone/tablet hybrid should be. If Samsung can simultaneously improve the strength and reliability of its ultra-thin glass protection material, the Galaxy Fold 2 could be a milestone in the industry's push to establish foldable devices as a more mainstream option.

In terms of specs, there is much uncertainty as to what the Galaxy Fold 2 might look like; WindowsUnited has reported that the device will feature the same 108 megapixel Isocell Bright HM1 camera, but there is no evidence to support that wishful thinking. At this stage, it seems merely "nice to have."

Similarly, Kahn's rendering includes the presence of an S Pen stylus, a staple of the Galaxy Note phablet series. If that were to happen, one would hope that the display cover would be strong enough to withstand repeated jabs and strokes.

As you may remember, reliability issues with the flexible plastic display of the original Galaxy Fold caused the model to be delayed from its planned April 2019 release until September. Therefore, it is possible that the Galaxy Fold 2 will be available by this summer. However, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has put the launch plans of all cell phone manufacturers in limbo. Nevertheless, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has left the launch plans of every cell phone manufacturer in limbo.
