Apple is considering adding rollable displays to many of its products, including the iPhone and Apple Watch.

A new Apple patent (reported by AppleInsider), titled "Electronic Device with Flexible Display Structure," details the idea of a flexible screen that can be rolled up and stored within the device.

One main roller holds the display in place when stowed, while an optional secondary roller unwinds it when needed, keeping the screen stable when extended. This does not necessarily replace the standard fixed screen of an iPhone or iPad, but could be a secondary display that can be pulled out when needed. For example, the fixed display could become a touch keyboard, while the rollout display could be used to display content.

Apple suggests making the display a transparent structure so that it can always serve its purpose. Building on this idea, Apple has also proposed the concept of a foldable device that would allow this rollout-able display to be folded without damaging the screen components.

And while this technology makes the most sense in tablets and cell phones from our perspective, Apple is trying to cover all bases in its patent text. The company suggests that the idea could be implemented on large items like laptops, as well as on smaller items like watches and glasses.

Of course, the patent is only until it is put to practical use. Even if Apple decides to make this rollable display a reality, it could still be years before it is implemented in consumer products.
