This fall, it was certain that at least some iPhone 12 models would include a time-of-flight camera. Now, code discovered within Apple's upcoming mobile operating system has confirmed the feature for iPhone 12 Pro models.

9to5Mac reports that sources in the developing iOS 14 have code associated with future Apple phones codenamed "d5x," two of which will feature ToF cameras. Since the iPhone 11 series is codenamed "d4x," this means that the two models with ToF sensors are the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The other camera will likely be the same main/ultra-wide/telephoto combination used in the iPhone 11 Pro. The ToF sensor is used as part of the Face ID system, which accurately reads a user's face, as well as the iPhone front The ToF sensor will likely be similar to the iPhone's front-facing TrueDepth camera, which is used as part of the Face ID system to accurately read a user's face.

The addition of a rear ToF camera would be useful for photo processing effects like blurring and augmented reality apps. Apple already has several AR apps like the Measure app and is reportedly working on more AR-related projects such as the Apple Store, a new Starbucks app (via 9to5Mac), and the rumored Glasses AR headset So adding a 3D sensor to a cell phone makes a lot of sense.

We had expected the iPhone 12 to launch this September. However, with the coronavirus outbreak causing many events to be canceled for public safety reasons and product manufacturing delays, it is unclear when the next iPhone will be available and whether there will be enough units to meet public demand.
