Uber will Stop Sharing Rides to Slow the spread of the coronavirus

Uber has made major changes to its service to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Reuters reports that Uber has stopped carpooling on its platform in the U.S. and Canada. In essence, the app's pooling option has been disabled.

The appeal of pooled Uber rides is that they can lower the price for riders by allowing them to share a trip with up to three other passengers. However, Uber eliminated this option to protect the safety of its employees and customers.

Initially, the move was targeted at the U.S. and Canada, but a spokesperson said the company is evaluating similar measures in other regions.

Uber also made a major change to its app when booking a ride. The warning reads: "Flatten curves. Move only if necessary. If you have no choice but to move, use caution for your safety and the safety of the community."

Meanwhile, the food delivery service Uber Eats continues to operate, but its operations may also be adjusted as conditions change.

As of Tuesday morning, the Lyft app was still offering shared rides for only 1-2 people in the app. [The coronavirus (COVID-19) has infected more than 182,400 people worldwide and killed more than 7,100. No more than 4,400 people have been infected in the U.S., with 87 deaths.
