SXSW2020 canceled by Coronavirus: This is all the tech events that have not happened (so far)

The impact of the coronavirus outbreak has also reached the tech industry.

The same week that Google canceled its annual developer conference scheduled for May, South by Southwest (SXSW) was also canceled. The tech and culture event was canceled today (March 6) after the mayor of Austin, Texas, declared a regional disaster to deal with the effects of the virus.

SXSW organizers were adamant that the show go on, even as participants like Facebook, TikTok, and Twitter all pulled out within the last week. However, the Austin mayor's order effectively made SXSW unviable.

Here is a summary of the tech events that have been canceled so far due to concerns about the coronavirus outbreak and how organizers have reorganized those events. It also shows the major tech events scheduled for the next few months that have been forced to announce their plans in response to the outbreak of coronavirus cases in the U.S. and abroad.

Mobile World Congress: The annual summit of the mobile industry in Barcelona was scheduled to begin on February 26, but organizers canceled the event in mid-February after many exhibitors pulled out. Qualcomm and Sony streamed their MWC announcements online, and LG announced the LG V60 ThinQ in a press release rather than at the MWC press event.

Game Developers Conference: Originally scheduled for the week of March 16, GDC was postponed a week earlier by organizers. They have said they will try to reschedule it for the summer.

SXW: The culture and technology festival was scheduled to open on March 13; it was the first time in 34 years that the conference was not held in March. Organizers say they are "reviewing the impact" of the City of Austin blocking SXSW.

Facebook F8: Facebook's developer conference is usually held at the end of April, but Facebook has already announced the discontinuation of this event. Instead, Facebook plans to "replace the in-person F8 event with locally hosted events, video, and live streaming content."

Google I/O: Google's annual developer conference will no longer be held at Shoreline Amphitheatre this May. This is usually an event where Google shows off the latest features in the next version of Android, and last year's show premiered the Pixel 3a and Nest Home Max.

Google is still looking at ways to move forward without an in-person event, with plans to be announced on its developer conference website.

Microsoft Build: Microsoft's annual developer conference is scheduled to begin on May 19, a week after Google I/O was supposed to kick off; there is no word on any change in the status of Microsoft Build, but Google's cancellation of I/O Microsoft has already canceled its March 15 Most Valuable Professional Summit due to coronavirus concerns.

Apple WWDC: The date for Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference has not yet been set. The most recent WWDC has been held in San Jose, California, and it appears that new versions of macOS, watchOS, and iOS 14 will be announced at this year's event. Apple has restricted employee travel to the countries most affected by the coronavirus, and the outbreak has forced the closure of Apple-owned stores in China.

E3: E3 is set to open on June 9, and with the postponement of the GDC, game makers have questioned whether this major game industry trade show event should continue, but so far organizers have said that the status of the event will not change as E3 will go ahead

Computex, Inc.

Computex: The largest notebook and PC trade show of the year will be held in Taiwan starting June 2. For now, the trade show is expected to continue. There is precedent for Computex 2003, which was postponed to September due to the SARS epidemic and thus postponed due to health concerns.

Of course, this list does not include unannounced product launch events, which may never be scheduled as companies consider the value of bringing large numbers of people to one area during a health crisis.

For example, Apple is rumored to be developing a successor to the iPhone SE, with the iPhone 9 expected to debut at an event later this month. However, that event may be postponed because the coronavirus outbreak threatens to slow production of its iPhone already.
