Hbo's Last of Us Series: Cast and Crew, Release Date and more

Grab your crossbow and get ready for the "infected": the "The Last of Us" series is coming to HBO. Yes, Joel and Ellie are heading to the land of not-so-television with their adaptation of Naughty Dog and Sony's acclaimed 2013 video game.

The news comes via The Hollywood Reporter, which quotes showrunner Craig Mazin as saying, " It has long been a dream of mine to get the chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art to film, and I am so honored to be able to do so in partnership with Neil [Truckman]."

HBO promoted the news of the series with this tweet featuring a GIF of the emblem of The Last of Us' antagonist group, the Fireflies:

The Hollywood Reporter has not said when The Last of Us series will reach HBO. It has not stated. Considering the time it takes to cast and produce the series, it should wait until at least 2022.

For the uninitiated, The Last of Us takes place in a dystopic version of our own world, ravaged by disease and filled with violent zombie-like creatures known as "the infected." The game stars Joel, a grizzled survivor who has lost his family and is hired to bring 14-year-old Ellie from the quarantine zone to a new location.

The Last of Us series is beloved not only for its gameplay but also for its gripping storyline, which is expected to be chock full of emotional and heartbreaking moments. The Last of Us series will focus on the plot of the original game, but a second installment could focus on the events of The Last of Us 2 (due out May 29, 2020).

No news on who will play Joel or Ellie, but we wouldn't bet against Ellen Page for the latter. Page accused the producers of "The Last of Us" of stealing her likeness in 2013.

HBO has left the "Last of Us" series in good hands. Craig Mazin of "Chernobyl" is reuniting with HBO for a series of video games.

More good news: The Last of Us writer and creative director Neil Druckman will write and executive produce the show.

Other exec producers include Caroline Strauss ("Game of Thrones," "Treme") and Evan Wells (president of Naughty Dog).

"The Last of Us" will be the first television series by PlayStation Productions, which will co-produce with Sony Pictures Television.

No trailers for The Last of Us series are available yet. Clips and set photos will be added as they become available.
