Captain Marvel 2 Release Date, Cast, Wolverine rumors, Trailer and more

With Carol Danvers' recent breakout role in a solo film and her pivotal role in "The Avengers", it seems inevitable that "Captain Marvel 2: Endgame" will be in the works.

Brie Larson's next superhero adventure is likely years away, as the MCU Phase Four schedule includes the upcoming Black Widow film, "The Eternals," "Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings" and other new franchises. However, Captain Marvel has become a key figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is almost certain to return in another solo film in the not-too-distant future.

Here is everything we know so far about "Captain Marvel 2," including release date, cast, and Wolverine rumors.

Captain Marvel 2 will not be released for another few years at the earliest. Marvel's Phase 4 lineup is set through 2021, which means that Carol Danvers will not return to the screen until 2022 at the earliest.

According to a recent tweet from MCU informant Charles Murphy, "Captain Marvel 2" will be released on July 29, 2022. The tweet also lists "Ant-Man 3" for release on February 18 of the same year and "Black Panther 2" on May 6.

While this tweet should be taken with a grain of salt, it is worth noting that Murphy correctly predicted the entire Marvel Phase 4 lineup for July 2019. Kevin Feige also confirmed a May 6 release date for "Black Panther 2" at last year's D23 (via The Verge), adding further weight to this guess.

While the cast for Captain Marvel 2 has yet to be confirmed, it is safe to assume that Brie Larson will reprise her role as Carol Danvers, the half-Kree, half-human, galaxy-spanning kicker. It would also not be surprising to see Samuel L. Jackson reprise his role as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as the seemingly evil but actually lovable Skrull Talos.

Depending on when "Captain Marvel 2" is made, Lashana Lynch may return as Carol's best friend Maria Rambo. However, if the film takes a major time jump to the present day, Maria's daughter, Monica Rambo, could appear, and she will be played by Teyonah Parris in the upcoming "WandaVision Disney Plus."

And if certain rumors are true, a special guest may make an appearance.

Take this with a grain of salt, but there is a big rumor going around that Henry Cavill (yes, Superman and the Witcher himself) will appear in "Captain Marvel 2" as the iconic X-Men character Wolverine. This incredibly sketchy rumor originated with a site called The Digital Weekly, which does not appear to cite any credible sources.

However, speculation that Henry Cavill will join the MCU as Wolverine is not entirely crazy. The "Man of Steel" star was rumored to be in talks with Marvel about a possible MCU appearance in 2019; according to an interview with IGN, it is already known that the X-Men will appear in the MCU, and Marvel Studios mastermind Kevin Feige has said that "a completely different way, he wants to bring the mutants into the picture. And what better way to do that than to have the X-Men's most iconic character appear in a Captain Marvel movie, played by one of the hottest actors of all time.

The trailer for Captain Marvel 2 is long overdue. If the film is indeed slated for a July 2022 release, we should see the first trailer in late 2021.

WARNING: Spoilers for Marvel Cinematic Universe films follow.

The first Captain Marvel film was set in the 90s and ended with Danvers defeating his former mentor Yon-Rogg and helping the stranded Skrulls find a new home. Later, we saw Danvers in the present day in The Avengers: Endgame, where he helped the Avengers defeat Thanos in the pivotal "Battle for Earth." A post-credits scene in "Spider-Man: Far From Home" revealed that Nick Fury is secretly working with Skrull in space, perhaps as part of the S.W.O.R.D. that many comic book fans have come to expect, protecting them from intergalactic threats. (essentially a space version of S.H.I.E.L.D.).

So the big question is whether "Captain Marvel 2" will bring things to the present day or explore an in-between era like "Wonder Woman 1984". We could see a film about what Danvers was doing in the galaxy when the Avengers were just getting started. Or, "Captain Marvel 2" could focus on the present day and form a new team of superheroes now that Iron Man and Captain America are out.

In 2019, Brie Larson herself said she would like to bring Kamala Khan, the modern-day Ms. Marvel, into "Captain Marvel 2." Given that Ms. Marvel will have her own show on Disney Plus in a few years, Danvers could introduce the young hero as a mentor in "Captain Marvel 2."
