A new sleeve is a new life. Season 2 of "Altered Carbon" is coming to Netflix with a new lead character, a new story, and a new mystery.

The sci-fi drama stars Takeshi Kovacs, a soldier turned investigator in the year 2384. Humanity has developed the technology to transfer consciousness into a new body.

Joel Kinnaman played Kovacs in Season 1, but in Season 2 of Altered Carbon, Avengers star Anthony Mackie (the future Captain America, Disney Plus' upcoming Marvel series Falcon &. The Winter Soldier) took over the role.

As noted above, Anthony Mackie takes over the lead role of Takeshi Kovacs, busy with Apple TV Plus' "For All Mankind" and the reboot/sequel "The Suicide Squad," first season star Joel Kina Mon should not feel too sorry for him.

Also, the original Kovacs, played by Will Yun Lee, will probably reappear in flashbacks.

Also returning are Renee Ellis Goldsberry as Kovacs' lost love Quercristo Falconer and Chris Conner as AI Hotel owner Poe.

Not returning from the Season 1 cast are James Purefoy as millionaire Lawrence Bancroft and Dichen Lachman as Kovacs' sister Raylene Kawahara. However, both characters can change into new bodies, so of course they could return.

"It's a producer's pipe dream because none of us need to appear in the next season," Purefoy told reporters at a press event. 'Our characters may appear, but our bodies can remain in the unemployment line.'

"Altered Carbon" Season 2 will consist of eight episodes, titled:

[28 Season 2 of "Altered Carbon" jumps back in time and begins 30 years after the events of Season 1. Takeshi Kovacs has been re-sleeved and his consciousness (played by Anthony Mackie) has been put into a new body, with upgrades of rapid healing and enhanced reaction time.

According to Netflix, in Season 2, Kovacs returns to his home planet of Harlan's World to continue his centuries-old quest to find his long-lost lover Quercristo Falconer (Renée Elise Goldsberry). Kovacs is also investigating a series of brutal murders, and is horrified to find that they are tied to his quest to find Quell. With the help of AI Poe, as well as a new ally, Kovacs must find out the truth about who Quell Christ Falconer is.

Season 2 may delve into issues related to transgenderism and gender fluidity through the body-swapping paradigm. [As show creator Laeta Kalogridis told The Wrap, "LGBTQ and a lot of the issues and the ways in which we feel comfortable or uncomfortable with our bodies is something that I think the show is very right to explore, but it hasn't done yet. It certainly did in the first season. We touched on it a little bit, but not much."
