Smartphone prices keep going up and up, and Samsung is really pushing the envelope with the new Samsung Galaxy S20.

However, new data shows that the majority of consumers are happy enough with cheaper phones. According to research firm Omdia, the iPhone XR was the best-selling phone in all of 2019. Price. $599.

According to Omdia's Smartphone Model Market Tracker report, Apple shipped 46.3 million iPhone XR units during 2019, and the $699 iPhone 11 was the second best-selling phone of the year with 37.3 million units shipped.

Samsung likewise had three models in the top five, but they were not flagship smartphones. Instead, they were inexpensive phones like the Samsung Galaxy A10 ($189), Galaxy A50 ($275), and Galaxy A20 ($250)

Although there were also ultra-premium phones that made the top 10, like the iPhone 11 Pro Max ($1,099), Generally, consumers seem to simply prefer more affordable phones.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 lineup looks great overall, but we're not sure if consumers will be willing to spend the money for what this model brings. The biggest upgrades are a 120Hz display, a more powerful zoom camera, and 5G connectivity.

In our tests, however, we found that the 120Hz display mode takes a big hit on the Galaxy S20 Ultra's battery life. And while the camera is certainly impressive, the 5G network is still being rolled out in the country.

Meanwhile, Samsung has been slashing prices on its Galaxy S10 lineup since last year, and these models will probably be among the top sellers this year. The Galaxy S10e starts at $599, $400 less than the Galaxy S20.

And Samsung did not announce its answer to the $699 iPhone 11 with its latest flagship, which I think is a big mistake for the Galaxy S20.

With the OnePlus 8 looming on the horizon and affordable flagships from Motorola and LG like the Motorola Edge Plus and LG V60, this could be the year of the well-priced phone.
