This year's iPad Pro (or iPad 2020, as we've decided to call it) is bound to feature many great advancements. We hear that it is already in production and may feature an all-new stylus with tactile feedback to compete with the Samsung Galaxy Note 20's revamped S Pen.

However, new production leaks reveal that a Taiwanese company has won a contract to begin supplying Apple with a screen that boasts new technology.

Taiwan's Economic Daily News confirmed that Innolux will supply Mini-LED panels for Apple's new iPad Pro, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Mini-LED screens are backlit by smaller LEDs, which are packed closer together to create a brighter screen and more vibrant color effects; clusters of LEDs can be dimmed in response to information received (called "dimming zones" ) and produce better color control, variety, and brightness than OLED screens, as well as (eventually) being cheaper to manufacture.

In short, the iPad will display better-looking images and video, with richer colors on the screen, and at a lower price. For those who use the iPad for creative applications, from photographers to graphic designers, this will be essential.

However, it may be difficult for Mini-LEDs to reproduce the deep blacks of OLEDs, which do not rely on backlighting. [All those who stream movies and TV, play games, look up recipes, and scroll through YouTube on their iPads will take advantage of the rich colors of Mini-LED displays. Mini-LEDs could displace OLEDs as this technology begins to become more common.

Note that Mini-LED screens should not be confused with MicroLED screens, which pack light on an even smaller scale; making an iPad, MacBook, or Apple TV requires so many tiny LEDs and circuitry that it is a very expensive method MicroLEDs are expected to be the first to appear in the Apple Watch Series 6 to produce the same vibrancy on a smaller scale. However, other companies, such as Samsung, are producing ultra-premium, supersized MicroLED TVs.

The first iPad 2020 is rumored to be available as early as this spring, but Apple's big announcements typically take place in the fall, and last year it was in September. Spring is too early to change things now, but if fall is Apple's strategy, the next iPad Pro with an abundance of mini LED screens will be on the horizon.
