Motorola appears to be trying to jump back into the flagship phone game with a new model designed to go head-to-head with Samsung's newly released Galaxy S20 lineup, or any other Android phone that's going to get attention this year.

According to a tweet from Mishaal Rahman, editor-in-chief of XDA Developers, the new model is called the Motorola Edge Plus and also introduces some of the specs of Motorola's first flagship phone since the Moto Z3 in 2018.

"What will the Moto Z4 be?" you may be asking yourself. You may remember that in exchange for a lower price, that phone used Qualcomm's top-of-the-line chipset, the Snapdragon 675, rather than the 8 series, a mid-range mobile processing platform, while the Moto Z3 used the Snapdragon 835, even this system-on-chip was already a year old by the time it was included in the Z3.

The Motorola Edge Plus takes a different approach, Rahman tweeted. It will be powered by the Snapdragon 865, the best chipset currently offered by Qualcomm and found in all of Samsung's new Galaxy S20 phones. In fact, the Galaxy S20 Ultra with the Snapdragon 865 produced the best benchmark results of any Android phone we have seen.

There is other evidence to suggest that Motorola plans to use the Snapdragon 865 in its next flagship. Motorola said it planned to adopt the chipset when Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 865 in December.

The Snapdragon 865 will give the Motorola Edge Plus more performance than the front line. The new handset will also join the ranks of 5G phones that can take advantage of the higher speeds and lower latency of 5G networks.

As for the Motorola Edge Plus' other specs, the new device will reportedly feature a 6.67-inch screen with a resolution of 2340 x 1080; while not as fast as the 120 Hz supported by the S20, it will be as fast as the OnePlus 7T and its smooth scrolling screen is identical to that of the OnePlus 7T.

The most eyebrow-raising specs included in Rahman's tweet concern the Motorola Edge Plus' battery. The battery could exceed 5,000 mAh, which is more capacity than Motorola has on longer-lasting phones like the Moto G7 Power and its upcoming successor, the Moto G Power. It would also line up nicely with the 5,000mAh S20 Ultra, which recently lasted more than 12 hours in a Tom's Guide battery test.

The leaked details of the Motorola Edge Plus are missing some key specs. We also don't know when the phone will be released, or whether the price will be closer to the Samsung Galaxy S20's $999 or the Moto Z4's $499 asking price. (We would guess the upper end of that range based on the premium specs, but that's just a guess.)

Subsequent tweets teased specs for Motorola's other two rumored devices, the Motorola One Mid and the Moto G8 Power Lite. The former device is expected to join the ranks of Android One phones that promise a purer Android experience with more regular updates. The handset will reportedly feature a Snapdragon 675 chipset, a 6.53-inch display, and a 4,000 mAh battery; the G8 Power Lite is expected to feature a MediaTek Helio P35 processor and a 5,000mAh battery . The two models are likely to target markets outside of the U.S.

, and the G8 Power Lite is expected to be available in the U.S. and Europe.
