Apple's upcoming iPhone 12 could receive a very fast Wi-Fi upgrade if new reports are to be believed.

According to Japanese Apple blog Macotakara (via AppleInsider), the iPhone 12 may support the IEEE 802.11ay wireless standard, which uses the 60 GHz band. This standard would allow gigabit transfers to other devices nearby, theoretically making things like transferring iPhone files to a Mac or casting video to a TV more nimble.

Macotakara also notes that the technology supports gesture recognition for "smart devices, health care, watchkeeping, personal identification, and in-car monitoring," and could potentially benefit platforms such as Apple Watch and CarPlay

The Macotacara report also mentions Apple's long-rumored AirTag, a Tile-like tracker that could track keys and other household items using Apple's "Find My" app. AirTag is waterproof, Apple Watch's magnetic charging technology and is expected to be available by fall 2020.

Finally, the report notes that while most of the iPhone 12 series will feature OLED displays, lower-priced LED models may be on the horizon. There is also a possibility of a "successor to the iPhone 11," which could be the entry model in this year's lineup.

The iPhone 12 lineup is expected to be announced at Apple's usual September event later this year and could come in as many as four variations. Until then, expect more major iPhone 12 (and iPhone 9) rumors to emerge.
