Android 11 has some great new features that will make Pixels, including the upcoming Pixel 5, stand out even more.

The Android 11 preview code, codenamed "Columbus," shows evidence of a new gesture that double-taps the back of the phone. The double-tap activates one of a series of functions, including launching the Google Assistant, launching the camera app, and playing and pausing media.

The news comes from XDA-Developers, who were exploring Android 11 developer preview code in their "SystemUIGoogle APK," an app responsible for the SystemUI component of Google Pixel phones. found evidence of Columbus functionality that works on the Pixel 4 XL and Pixel 2XL.

Will Google make the final version available for older Pixels, or will it be exclusive to the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a? XDA Developers has also published footage of the feature actually activating the camera:

The code uses "com.google" instead of the "com.android" used in the previous Pixel first feature: active edge and motion sense. Nevertheless, Columbus only needs an accelerometer and gyroscope to function.

One caveat about its play/pause feature: XDA found that it does not work on apps in the background, including Google's own Play Music and YouTube.

Columbus fits perfectly with another Android feature, Flip to Sea, which silences your phone when you lay it face down on the table.
