Wireless charging is becoming increasingly common in the best cell phones, but still quite rare is the reverse wireless charging feature. It allows you to use your device's battery to transfer some juice to other gadgets, such as other phones or wireless earbuds.

Samsung offers reverse wireless charging with its Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 10 series, and Huawei does the same with its Huawei P30 Pro and Mate 30 Pro. However, there will likely be a third smartphone with this feature in the near future.

XDA Developers, as part of their investigation of the Android 11 developer beta, discovered a new string of code related to a feature called "Battery Share." The code does not yet have an official logo, as it reuses an existing battery image, but the code does not lie.

Presumably this is a feature coming to the Pixel 5, based on the wireless charging found in the Pixel 3 and Pixel 4.

The next mid-range Google phone, the Pixel 4a, will be the first, but since the Pixel 3a did not have wireless charging, this model may not have this feature; at under $400, there is limited technology to expect; the Pixel 4a will have wireless charging, and the Pixel 5 will have wireless charging.

This finding has implications beyond Google's own hardware. With the exception of Apple (with iOS), support is built directly into the operating system used by essentially every smartphone manufacturer in the world, so Google can help smaller manufacturers reverse making it much easier to add wireless charging.

Nevertheless, judging by the tags surrounding the code, XDA Developers believe that this feature is unique to Google.
