Apple has released a new beta version of iOS 13.4. This beta version includes the new AppleKeys feature that allows users to unlock, lock, and start their cars using their iPhone or Apple Watch. Most interestingly, these virtual keys can be shared.

As MacRumors discovered, the ongoing "CarKey" feature will allow users to use virtual keys stored in the Apple Wallet app to open and start NFC sensor-equipped cars. This feature was first included in beta 1 of iOS 13.4, but details are now being worked out.

In iOS 13.4, keys can also be shared via the Messages app, although this feature appears to be disabled for group conversations. These keys can be used from an iPhone or Apple Watch and can be given permanently to a trusted person or temporarily if the person to whom the key is sent does not need or should not have permanent access.

Like Apple Pay, CarKey authentication is done with a biometric sensor on the phone. For recent iPhones, including the current iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro, this is Face ID; for older models, it is Touch ID. There is also an "Express Mode" that does not require authentication, similar to the ability to use Apple Pay on certain public transportation networks without unlocking the phone.

Naturally, Apple will need to work with automakers to make this technology work. The good news is that since the CarPlay interface is installed in hundreds of cars, Apple has existing relationships with many of the world's major car companies, and it would not take much effort to convince them to add the NFC pads needed to unlock and start the car.

As a member of the Car Connectivity Consortium, Apple is well suited to take advantage of the industry group's latest digital key standard, which utilizes the U1 ultra-wideband connectivity chip found in the iPhone 11 series.

An Apple event will be held on March 31, rumor has it. Otherwise, perhaps at WWDC 2020 in June, Apple will debut CarKey and its other iOS 13.4 features along with a more significant operating system refresh.
