Redbox is back from the dead and is targeting Netflix with its free "live" TV

Redbox Enters Crowded Cord-Cutting Market The company best known for its DVD kiosks rolled out ad-supported Redbox Free Live TV last week, adding to its arsenal to compete with services like Pluto and fight Netflix.

Redbox Free Live TV is not "live TV" like Hulu With Live TV or YouTube TV. This new service offers a set of free, curated, ad-supported shows and movies. So you can't scroll through the various cable channels to see what's currently airing and watch it. [Instead, Redbox Free Live TV content comes from brands such as TMZ, USA Today, Food52, Fail Army, and FilmRise. Some of the most well-known TV shows include Forensic Files, Unsolved Mysteries, and Family Feud. You can launch episodes and watch them "live" with ads. redbox also makes movie collections such as Redbox Comedy and Redbox Rush. As is the case with most streaming services, titles come and go.

Redbox Free Live TV may not actually be "live," but it is definitely free and most similar to Pluto and IMDB TV. No subscription (or email address) is required to watch.

The service is currently available on iOS and Android devices as well as Redbox.com. In the coming months, it will also be rolled out to Samsung, Visio, and LG smart TVs, as well as Roku, Apple TV, and Chromecast.

The new service expands Redbox's streaming efforts. The company launched Redbox on Demand in 2017. This online marketplace allows users to rent and buy movies and TV shows (like Amazon Prime and Apple).

And last year, Redbox announced plans to develop original content in multiple genres, including action, comedy, and suspense/thriller, positioning the company to compete with the likes of Netflix.

Redbox said in a statement:

"Redbox is always looking for ways to bring more content and value to consumers. We have launched free live streaming movies and TV to select consumers through our website and mobile app, and Redbox believes that the future of entertainment is dynamic and will consist of the right mix of live and video content. This service complements our new release kiosks and on-demand with ad-supported catalog content, promoting a new entertainment scene and giving Redbox a new way to promote our brand outside of our network."
