We can add another failure to the Windows 10 Update Hall of Fame.

The Windows 10 KB4532693 update was already problematic in that it started the operating system with the default Start menu and desktop. All shortcuts and customization options were gone.

But now there is an even bigger problem: the Windows 10 KB4532693 update is also said to delete files stored on the desktop.

A bug in the update is said to be hiding user profiles and their respective data on some Windows 10 systems.

According to Windows Latest, "Many users can restore files from a temporary folder, but some users who have lost all their desktop files cannot bypass their profile folders."

In some cases, after installing Windows 10 KB4532693, users were unable to find complete traces of their missing personal data."

According to ZDNet, complaints have piled up pretty much everywhere, from Twitter and Reddit to Microsoft forums.

It is understandable that users are frustrated, as not being able to see or access their original Windows 10 profiles is extremely annoying.

According to Bleeping Computer, the original user profile folders are still on the disk, but the extension has been changed to .000 or .bak. And while there is a way to restore the profiles, the data may be permanently lost.

A better answer is to simply uninstall KB4532693. From there, click on "View Update History" and then "Uninstall Updates. Finally, uninstall the KB4532693 update by right-clicking on it.

Remarkably, this is already the third Windows 10 failure for 2020, and February is not over yet. Earlier this month, Windows 10 update KB4532695 caused slow Wi-Fi speeds and sound issues. And in January, a critical security update for Windows 10 failed to install.
