The display on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is certainly glass, but does it matter?

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip has a glass surface after all, but don't fret. Please take a look:

Over the weekend, YouTube channel Jerry Rigs Everything got their hands on a new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and did the usual scratch test using various Mohs scale hardness testing tools. The results were terrible. Samsung claims that this new ultra-thin glass is as hard as a typical glass phone, but that's not the case. In fact, Jerry found that it scratches just as much as the plastic displays used in Samsung's Galaxy Fold and Motorola's Razr.

Everyone asked if Samsung was lying about this magical ultra-thin glass, so YouTuber PBKreviews tried to see what was going on. As it turned out, the display was indeed scratched like plastic. However, when he peeled back the protective layer of plastic, he found, as expected, an ultra-thin glass that shatters just like glass when bent too far.

In other words, Samsung appears to be telling the truth, but who the hell cares at this point? For Samsung, if the outer layer can be scratched just like plastic, who cares what is underneath it? It will scratch just as much as the Fold or Razr. If there is no benefit to the user, then they don't need to care if the inner layer is made of glass. Also, the protective layer would not add an essential feature to the phone because the user would not be able to remove it if it gets scratched.

Ultra-thin glass seems to serve only as a marketing sheet bullet point. And these extreme tests do not seem to be of much value either, as they do not indicate how users will treat the phones. Ultimately, it seems we will have to wait until a few months have passed and we can test the durability of these phones in normal use.
